Personal Branding Interview Dr. Woody - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Dr. Woody - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Mike “Dr. Woody” Woodward, who is the author of The YOU Plan: A 5-Step Guide to Taking Charge of Your Career in the New Economy, a coach and consultant. In this interview, Dr. Woody talks about career development in a bad economy, how to create your own opportunities, why passion can be both good and bad, and more. How has the recession changed the employment landscape? As a nation we got fat and happy. Companies became overstaffed and overconfident. As the labor market became more globalized, companies looked off-shore to cut labor costs, their largest expense. Keep in mind, a lot of the inflated earnings being reported are the direct result of cutting staff, not improved performance! So, as a result of this the American worker got left behind. Unemployment is higher now than it was a year ago, which does not bode well for the job seeker. The fact is, it’s no longer about chasing opportunities, it’s about creating opportunities! What are some ways to create your own opportunities? We as Americans, particularly in the business world, are so obsessed with forward motion, that we loose sight of where we are actually going. It’s more about beating the guy next to you at a particular moment in time than actually getting across the finish line. The reason I chose the title “The YOU Plan” for my book is because I believe in running your own race on your own time! Creating opportunities starts with stepping back and taking stock of who you are and what you have to offer. The introspective process is about building self-awareness, which is critical to developing the vision necessary to see the potential in all that lies in front of you. It may sound a bit esoteric, but you have to know yourself and approach the world with an open mind in order to create opportunities. How do you define your passion and a solid career roadmap? Watch out! Because passion can be both good and bad. We are all familiar with “crimes of passion” or passionate “activists” who wreak havoc in the streets. When it comes to aligning your passions with your career aspirations I always recommend stepping back and exploring what really brings out your positive energy! Ask yourself what is it that gets you bounding out of bed in the morning? Be sure not to get too mired in specific activities or tasks. Look for underlying themes across those activities and identify the essence of what really elicits your passion. Passion is a very personal thing, so take the time to really explore your mind because only you have the answer! What does it take to stand out in the crowded marketplace today? As you know, it’s all about the brand! You can be the greatest in the world at what you do, but if no one knows it doesn’t matter. Developing a personal brand is a process. As I previously mentioned, it starts with self-awareness. Your brand should be a true reflection of who you are, which means you have to know yourself first. When it comes to standing out from the crowd, you have to think about what it is that sets you apart and find a way to emphasize that! You also have to show you can deliver. At the end of the day, a brand is a promise and you have to be willing and able to keep that promise. What are the obstacles to making money doing what you love? Passion is an interesting thing. It’s rare that your passions and career activities will always be perfectly aligned. Not everything you are passionate about is necessarily going to be a potential revenue generating activity. Some passions are better left as hobbies or community service as opposed to a vocation. My goal with “The YOU Plan” is to show people how to draw out their passions and learn to apply them positively in all that they do. The last thing you want is to go through life being a robot. My advice is to spend your time thinking about what really excites you and explore the various avenues you can pursue that will allow you to draw on your passion. - Mike “Dr. Woody” Woodward, PhD is a CEC certified professional coach trained in the field of organizational psychology. He is the author of The YOU Plan: A 5-Step Guide to Taking Charge of Your Career in the New Economy. As a coach and consultant, Dr. Woody works with both private and corporate clients on career development and building management/leadership capacity. Dr. Woody focuses on the psychology of communication, leadership, and career re-engagement. Dr. Woody is the founder and president of Miami-based consulting firm Human Capital Integrated (HCI). The firm focuses on management and leadership development. In conjunction with founding and running HCI, Dr. Woody is also the founder of DrWoody.com a dynamic media site dedicated to work-life issues and career entrepreneurialism in the new economy. Dr. Woody also serves on the Academic Advisory Board for the Florida International University Center for Leadership. Prior to founding the consulting firm HCI in 2005, Dr. Woody served as a management and human resources consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting (PwC) and as a project manager for IBM Business Consulting Services in Washington DC.

Advertising Tips For Your New Side Hustle

Advertising Tips For Your New Side Hustle If youve got a new side hustle or small business venture in the works, gaining customers is top priority. So like most   other businesses, advertising is a requirement. Since the first ads began to take shape in the 16th century, the course of advertising has undoubtedly changed as new technological advancements came onto the scene. Today, we live in the digital age, and advertising tactics have been molded to fit audiences who live on the internet. Improve your employability at university!

Improve your employability at university! We often tell current students to ‘just do something!’ to prepare for a future career when they are studying. It’s not always obvious what to do, but Warwick graduate Claire Kilroy,  recently a content writer for the UK’s leading graduate recruitment company Inspiring Interns and Careers Consultant Sue Johnstone, have some suggestions. When at university, the future can seem a long way off. You’re focused on getting your degree and what lies beyond graduation is a slightly terrifying mystery. But what you get up to at university can have a real impact on your future employability. Luckily, whether you’re heading into your first year or final year, there’s plenty you can do to help boost your prospects; it’s much less scary heading into the big wide world with some great stuff on your CV. So take a look at this by-no-means exhaustive list of the opportunities available. Make the most of the careers office and employer fairs It’s never too early to start thinking about your life after university â€" you will be in your final year in a heartbeat. Whatever happens, make sure you make the most of the careers service before you leave: 1) Book an appointment with a careers adviser. Don’t be worried because you have no idea what you want to do and think the meeting will be embarrassing â€" they’re there to help you figure stuff out, and will have seen plenty of other students in the same boat as you are. 2) Head to industry-focused careers talks. It’s difficult to know what you want to do when you have no real idea of what an industry is like, and these will help you get some insight. You could just listen, but if you’re feeling brave you can ask questions and maybe meet the speakers afterwards. Think networking! 3) Attend careers fairs.  Your university will publish a list of the employers attending. Take a look at the list and decide who you really want to talk to; a targeted approach works better than a scattergun one. After all, it’s not only your chance to learn more about the employer, but to make a positive first impression on recruiters. Do research on the company, and prepare a few pertinent questions. Be a part-timer If you fancy earning some money as well as developing new skills, think about part-time or temporary work. You can apply for work in the local area in the normal way, or look for jobs through the university itself. At Warwick, for example, there are often positions in the Student Union. Unitemps is a recruitment agency that specifically focuses on students, so any employer hiring you knows that you’ll be balancing your job with your studies. Unitemps is also dedicated to looking after students’ welfare, and they’ll help you avoid positions where you feel exploited. Write for student newspapers and websites Writing for a publication like the Student Newspaper isn’t only worth considering if you want to become a journalist; having strong written communication skills can boost your employability no matter what industry you want to go into. Plus you’ll be working with a great team of other student writers, building a network of contacts and friends. Alternatively â€" or additionally â€" consider starting a blog. This can impress employers, especially if you’re aiming to go into the creative industries. You can add a link to your blog to your CV (if it’s suitably employer-friendly), and present clear evidence of your skills. Maintaining an active blog also demonstrates self-discipline, so always try and stick to a regular posting schedule. Become a student volunteer Volunteering is a great way to contribute to a cause you care about, and university is the perfect time to go for it. Most universities have links with various charities and volunteer programmes; finding opportunities is easy, and you’ll have the support of the university if difficulties arise. You’re bound to find a cause that you want to dedicate some time to. Most focus on local concerns, so you’ll have a chance give back to the community around you. And you’ll be helping yourself at the same time. Volunteering allows you to develop and gain evidence of some key soft skills, like your emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and ability to deal with sensitive situations. You could also find yourself getting some relevant experience in areas like marketing, events, or sales. Make the most of the societies scene Societies are a fantastic way to meet new people who share your interests, whatever they may be. Check out what’s on offer. You will probably find everything from the politically important â€" like Pride and the Anti-Sexism Society â€" to the niche â€" like the Jane Austen Society or the Allotment Society! University societies may have a reputation for the social aspects but there’s more to them than a work-out for your liver. Taking an active role, rather than just turning up to various events, could boost your employability. Aim for a role on the exec â€" organising society events or balancing the books will be positives for your CV. Knuckle down… Getting the most out of your time at university is all about finding a balance between your studies and the other things on offer. At times you might find yourself taking on too much; if that’s the case be ready to take a step back. But don’t just split your time between your room and the library â€" there’s a lot more out there to explore. Measuring happiness - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Measuring happiness - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Mike Wagner pointed me to this article in Business 2.0 on measuring happiness. Does money really buy happiness? Not in Japan, apparently. Even the United States, the alleged capital of materialism, is not nearly as happy as its per capita income suggests it should be. Colombians and Costa Ricans, on the other hand, claim a level of satisfaction with their lives that is totally out of proportion with their income. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. And if you want more great tips and ideas you should check out our newsletter about happiness at work.
