Stand out in a sea of sameness -

Stand out in a sea of sameness - Theres no shortage of information about how difficult the job market is right now. Over and over, job seekers look for ways to stand out, to be one in a crowd, to grab (and keep) the attention of the hiring manager. You might be surprised to know that it may not be as difficult as you think to stand out in a crowded market. Some ideas for your consideration: Know what you have to offer. You would be surprised (or maybe not!) to learn how few job seekers I meet can easily describe what skills they bring to the table. Being able to succinctly describe those skills in a networking setting without resorting to the catch all/kiss of death, I can do anything will absolutely help you stand out. Follow THIS link for more ideas about your elevator pitch. Know where to look. I teach clients to identify organizations and companies, not specific jobs. The fact is, most jobs are not actually advertised. (It may be as many as 70-80% of positions.) Rather, they are filled via networking and referrals. Stop spending all of your time looking for jobs. Research and target organizations instead and you will automatically stand out as someone not overly concerned with focusing on a specific job and more interested in the big picture. Great materials. This is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, most resumes are simply not very good. There are basic concerns aesthetics, grammar, verb tense, consistency. These are not difficult to address. The bigger concern is making sure the resume specifically focuses on the employers needs and highlights the job seekers skills and accomplishments. If you are sending out a resume that lists stuff that you have done but is not adequately connecting to the employers needs, you are missing a key opportunity to stand out in the crowd. Excellent follow-up. Again, a factor that is completely in the job seekers control. When you network, you have the opportunity to leave an impression and gain an advocate. However, everyone is busy. How you follow up can help you stand out in a way that may make the difference between learning about a hidden opportunity and not. Stay tuned for my next post.Follow-up that is head and shoulders above the rest! Learn how I can help you navigate your job hunt. photo by picsbycam

Bloomberg stood out as a company where you can create your own career path and take on additional responsibilities if you prove yourself.Tell me about the roles that youve held at Bloomberg, as well as your current one. What about this role fruchtwein excites you?In the eight years that Ive been at Bloomberg, Ive had the opportunity to take on many different roles. I started out as a Global Data analyst across many domain areas. After a few years on various teams, I was offered a new opportunity in our London office to become a Product Manager for 8 different products and teams. In 2017, I returned to the US to start a new group within Global Data focused on News Automation and generating data insights for our clients. Can you tell us a bit more about News Automation? We heard thats a big initiative, what does it mean? And what has your role in this been? When you think about News Automation, a good place to start is with a concept called data journalism. Data journalism is a way of leveraging different sources of data to surface hidden trends that can drive a news story, utilizing data to generate infographics for visualization, or using data to assist in telling a story. While data journalism mucksmuschenstill involves an editor manually publishing a news story, automated news means that the story is being generated, written, and published by technology. This is especially useful for headlines and stories that clients expect from Bloomberg as quickly as possible, giving our subscribers an edge. Youre dealing in seconds or milliseconds. In my role as the Global Data Head of News Automation and Automated Insights, my team works across numerous departments within Bloomberg, including Engin eering, News, Product, and more to deliver the highest quality data to meet the needs for automated journalism. What does a typical day look like?No two days are ever the same. As a project-based team where projects can belastung a day, weeks, or months, we work with many different products and teams across the company. We stay ahead of the curve with the latest technology and training so we can continue to deliver high quality data to our customers quickly.Day to day, the roles and responsibilities can really vary. One day you could be assisting with a sales campaign for your product, another day you could be building out new technology and tools to work with your datasets, and another day you could be working with the data to identify trends and anomalies that lead to market-moving news stories. The fact that Global Data is so dynamic and allows for the utilization and development of a wide range of skills makes it one of the most exciting departments to work in at Bloomberg.Tell us about your role as Global Data Diversity Inclusion Champion for the Americas. This year, I began to serve as the Diversity Inclusion Business Champion for Global Data Americas. In this role, I work with our Bloomberg communities, including women, members of the LGBTQ community, Black professionals, Latinx professionals, disabled professionals, and more. I partner with a variety of teams including my fellow DI Business Champions in our EMEA and APAC regions, and engage with leadership at all levels to ensure we are developing an inclusive and diverse environment to drive better geschftliches miteinander impact. The idea of working in a company and culture where I along with all employees can bring our authentic selves to work is what drives my efforts to ensure we nourish and develop this environment. These efforts can include creating forums to share new ideas and perspectives, pointing out and providing feedback on unconscious/conscious bias in the workplace, and looking at the business to identify opportunities to eliminate or improve practices that impinge on a diverse and inclusive culture.Whats something youre especially good at at work?In my time at Bloomberg, I always strive to tackle the most challenging problems, teams, or products whenever possible. My willingness to take risks and my ability to quickly jump into new areas, learn about them, identify gaps and opportunities, create a strategic plan, and engage with my teams and internal and external stakeholders to gain consensus and drive results has shaped my career here. What about outside of work? Im a bit of a game fiend. From video games to cards to sports to board games, I love playing a good game by myself or with friends or family. I also love to create new things or experiences and am particularly passionate about creative writing, cooking, gardening, painting, and throwing parties for friends and family. What are you trying to improve on?There are two main areas I am focused on improving right now. One is expanding my technical coding languages and libraries the other is paying close attention to how I deliver feedback to senior management so we can drive positive action and results. Bloomberg has provided a dynamic approach in expanding my technical skillset through ed ucation and practice. There have been opportunities to engage in training courses and online programs that focus on building coding skills in certain languages, and Ive also been given the flexibility to take on stretch projects that require me to build on and leverage these skill sets.Whats the one career move youve made that youre most proud of?The career move Im most proud of was my move to London to take on a new manager role leading 13 different products and 60-plus analysts. It was a huge risk in all areas of my life. Professionally, I was managing more products than ever before, moving to a different country, and working in a different office culture with people Id never met. Personally, I was leaving behind my friends, family, and boyfriend to go to a country where I literally only knew co-workers. While I am now back in the US, my time in Europe put my self-development into overdrive and made me a better manager and a stronger individual. What are you currently reading/watc hing/listening to?While I love almost all music genres, Ive recently been listening to the Silkroad Ensembles Sing Me Home album. Founded by Yo-Yo ma, its a blend of cultural influences and musicians from all over the world to create unique cross-cultural music. Id recommend starting with the songs Cabalino and Heart and Soul.Whats your 1 piece of advice for women who are looking for jobs right now?Be confident in yourself and take risks. If there is an opportunity you are interested in but you dont meet all the requirements, pause a moment and really think about whether or not ticking off those one or two boxes will impede you from success in that role.If I hadnt had this mentality, I would have never had my many different roles at Bloomberg, because every time I moved positions, there was always some sort of skill gap. What was the best quality of the best boss youve ever had?The best boss I ever had was able to work with a multitude of people and find the unique quality or skill s et that each person brought to the table, regardless of tenure, experience, or background. This manager could bring together a disparate group of individuals and create a high-performing team. At the same time, this manager was always willing to stand for his people and take risks on them.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with Bloomberg.Find a job there today

TAFE or Uni - Which one is better

TAFE or Uni - Which one is better TAFE or Uni Which one is better?Posted July 5, 2019, by EleshaTAFE or Uni - which one is better? Well, there are lots of things to consider when deciding between the two From what career youd like to pursue, your learning style and how you plan to pay the tuition fees. Other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) can make great further education options too.Lets take a look at the different study paths to help you decide which one is right for you. What is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions are Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) which are run and financed by state and territory governments.RTOs offer the following qualifications -Certificate I, II, III, and IVDiplomaAdvanced DiplomaVocational Graduate CertificateVocational Graduate DiplomaTAFE is just one kind of RTO. There are also private colleges and online course providers that offer highly specialised, industry-focused knowledge a nd training and are a great alternative to studying at university or TAFE.Whats The Difference Between University and TAFE?Trade vs ProfessionTraditionally, trade vs profession was a key difference between the two - TAFE was for trades like electricians, builders, hairdressers, mechanics, etc while University for professions such as engineering, law, medicine, architecture, etc.The decision was pretty easy if you wanted to become an electrician, you went to TAFE and if you wanted to be an Engineer, you went to University. While some of these differences are still relevant, there is a lot mora cross over. These days TAFE (and fellow RTOs) offers a scope of trades including IT, retail, aged care childcare, cosmetics, management, tourism, engineering, and business. In the past University was the only path to complete a degree and TAFE offered a certificate or diploma qualification only - this has also changed. You can now earn associate and bachelor degrees for certain professions throug h TAFE.Vocational Training vs Academic StudyThe learning environment of TAFE is more focused on delivering practical, job-specific skills. Training emphasises skills and knowledge required for a particular trade like plumbing or hairdressing or a specific job function, like data entry or typing.University, on the other hand, offers a more academic learning experience. Academic education is focused on knowledge that is educational, schobelastungic and theoretical. This isnt always the case though, some Universities focus on practicality and employability in their course options.TAFE offers a variety of online course options and completingundergraduate and postgraduate coursesonline with some of Australias leading Universities is also possible.Entry RequirementsAustralian University degrees have varying levels of standard entry requirements into undergraduate (bachelor), postgraduate (master) and research degrees. If you want to go to University fresh out of year 12, your Australian Te rtiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will be the main criteria for entry into the majority of undergraduate University programs. As you continue to further your study, subsequent degrees will have higher entry requirements.TAFE also has minimum entry requirements no matter the qualification you plan to study but many courses have a lower minimum requirement than University degrees. Entry requirements can vary from English language, academic prerequisites or an additional portfolio.FundingHow will you pay for your course? When deciding where to study the financial aspects definitely require careful considerationMost students who choose the University path will have access to HECS - Higher Education Contribution Scheme. Essentially, HECS allows you to accumulate your University fees as a loan that you late repay through the Australian Taxation Office once your income hits a certain level.Funding for TAFE isnt as broad and while there is financial assistance and government subsidised training available, it depends on the course you choose. Funding also varies depending on where you study so be sure to check opportunities in the state or territory relevant to you.TimeThe time commitment required for each qualification might play a role in your decision making. Usually, a bachelors degree takes 3 - 4 years to complete and a masters degree will take another 2 years approximately.A Certificate through TAFE may take 6 -12 months full time to finish, 1 - 2 years for a diploma while apprenticeships and traineeships can last anywhere from 3 - 5 years. Can TAFE Get Me Into University?Yes You can complete a Tertiary Preparation Certification (TPC) through TAFE which is a qualification equivalent to Year 12.The TPC will allow you to gain a Tertiary Entrance Score which is equivalent to an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) and can be used to apply for entry to universities across Australia. Some TAFE Institutes around Australia also offer higher education degrees. No matter wh ere you choose to study, weve got some awesome study tips for you and mistakes you definitely dont want to make ResourcesMy first resumeCover letter for my first jobCareer Insider StoriesShelley Lask - Body Positive Health & FitnessInterested in becoming a?Human Resources OfficerGeneral ManagerBusiness ManagerAccountantOffice AdministratorPopular Career Searches10 best jobs for the futurebest career aptitude testwhat is vocational education and training key featureswell developed written and verbal communication skillsbest careers for the next ten years CoursesBachelor of Social WorkEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Health AdministrationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Criminal JusticeEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Allied Health AssistanceEnquire Online Enquire OnlineEleshaRelated ArticlesBrowse moreCoachingCommunity ServicesMaking lives betterAre you a compassionate and nurturing person with a passion for helping people overcome difficult situ ations?
